WiFog: what is worth for

Briefly on the service  http://wifog.com/

the company offers free mobile Internet and some free time calls within Sweden to any phone, in exchange of watching commercials. It is difficult to argue about what you get since is sort of free, but here is my experience with the service that could give you more on what to expect and is it really worth it.

  • Yes, it fits perfectly on my old spare Android phone.
  • No, you cant use it as replacement to your main phone.

Initially the service offered free mobile Internet for watching 3 commercials, 120 minutes of free call time and 200 SMS. If you exceed the call time there is no option to buy or get more. The internet connection is limited by volume and time. Initially there was no word on what is the amount and time - I guess because it was changing too often. Nowadays, one can watch one commercial and get about 100 MB for some time specified in %. The top limit is 4GB per month which is rather generous. The speed is also reasonable when the service is functional. The new rules for the calls are that you get 70 minutes and 90 SMS for free and you can add more by watching commercials up to another limit.

It is pointless to go in more detail since they will change inevitably.

Now, why you can't use it as replacement of your phone - well it works only in Sweden. You can't call abroad or from abroad. There are service disruptions and essentially no support. Recently, I could not watch the commercials, so I could not browse... At the same time, a month ago, on the train I was able to tether to my laptop for 1 hour before I was asked to top-up again. When it works it is really nice offer and since it is free one can't complain. So, enjoy it but do not rely on it!

Personally, I use it to browse when I am commuting and call any product support (on their long queues). I have Tasker that forwards all SMS to my main mobile. The calls can't be redirected but Tasker can send you an SMS upon missed call ;-) - perfect to avoid spam of all sort.

It is worth noting that on couple of occasions, the SMSes were delayed quite substantially - 5 minutes for up to 30 mins. Usually they are just fine.

Note: You need smart phone and watch the commercials, since in the agreement somewhere it says you have to. You can't use only the free calls and SMS.

Update 4 Feb 2015: Changing the rules again... From March 2GB mobile net, 100 min calls and 200 SMS. There will be a Wifog Plus where you can buy internet package for limited time etc... As before, just read the latest rules on the web page.
